The University of Alaska Anchorage’s Master of Public Health degree emphasizes specific health issues and challenges in Alaska and the circumpolar region. Considerations include limited infrastructure, arctic weather patterns, great geographic distances, small populations, cultural diversity and severe workforce shortages.

Local adaptations and solutions to local determinants and distributions of disease, injury and health and well-being are highlighted in teaching, service and research activities. To best meet the needs of students, all courses are offered via distance learning; students must also attend an intensive MPH Seminar Day in Anchorage each year and present an in-person defense of their final practicum thesis project.
