Harry T. Kwon, PhD, MPH, MCHES
Serving in a personal capacity
Dr. Kwon is the director of the Division of Research Education in the Office of Extramural Research, Education, and Priority Populations at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Dr. Kwon directs the division that oversees the agency’s research education, training, and career development award programs. Prior to AHRQ, Dr. Kwon served as a health scientist in the Office of Communications and Public Liaison at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the National Institutes of Health and provided program management and evaluation support for several cancer communication program initiatives, led capacity building efforts among public health practitioners and directed public health education efforts. Prior to federal service, Dr. Kwon was a technical director in the communications and health marketing division at Macro International (now ICF International) and provided program leadership and support for a number of public health programs.
Dr. Kwon has served on a number of boards and federal workgroups. He currently serves as the vice chair of the Education Board of the American Public Health Association (APHA) and is a member on the US Department of Health and Human Services Workgroup on Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Issues. He is also the past chair of the Asian Pacific Islander Caucus for Public Health, in official relations with APHA. At the local level, Dr. Kwon served two terms on the Montgomery County, Maryland Commission on Health and chaired the Asian American Health Initiative Steering Committee of Montgomery County.
Dr. Kwon received a BA in social ecology and a BS in biological sciences from the University of California, Irvine and an MPH degree in health promotion from the Graduate School of Public Health at San Diego State University. He earned his PhD in public and community health from the University of Maryland, College Park. He is also credentialed as a Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing.
Dr. Kwon was appointed to the governing board of the Council on Education for Public Health in 2017 by the American Public Health Association. His current term extends through 2019.
